Abstract

The study “Achieving Success in Internet-Supported Learning in Higher Education: Case Studies Illuminate Success Factors, Challenges, and Future Directions” published in February of 2005 developed some potential insights into the common success factors for successful adoption of Internet-supported learning (IsL). This follow-up study tested a collaborative self-audit framework incorporating six success factor categories from the prior study that constitute a system for successful IsL: motivation, leadership, programmatic approach, student support, faculty support, and measurement. The framework is collaborative in that IsL initiatives from different institutions are benchmarked against each other and the data collection that determines the rating of an individual initiative is from multiple respondents. This paper summarizes the preliminary findings with respect to efficacy of the framework as well as an overview of the participants, analysis of the success factor scores, Internet-supported learning trends, and vendor satisfaction. Among the key findings were the emergence of measurement and leadership as greater challenges than faculty participation and a near term focus on improving student services and course quality. The self-audit process has been set up as a database for benchmarking by additional IsL initiatives and longitudinal comparisons for prior participants at any time.
