Best Practices in Open Source Software in Higher Education
(go to the main A-HEC open source page)

Participate to get the full study report: The value of participating is that you will receive the in-depth study report. Note: You do not have to be using open source software currently or have given open source serious consideration to participate in this study. We are looking for a variety of perspectives from institutions that have implemented open source and those who have not. We want to understand the perceptions of those in the majority who have not implemented and not seriously considered open source yet.

Primary contact: Respondents for the study will typically be the CIO or Vice President of Information Technology for an entire institution, system, or consortium, or a person responsible for IT of a department or unit within an institution. A person is also qualified to be a respondent if they have been resposible for evaluating institutional or departmental use of or evaluation of open source. The survey guides the respondent to determine if they are qualified to respond.

Questions the Study Will Attempt to Answer:

  • Which open source products are currently ready for deployment and what resources are required?  This inquiry may be limited to higher education specific products in order to bound the inquiry.
  • If institutions are not using open source products, what are the reasons?
  • What are identified best practices for deploying higher education specific open source products?
  • Are the costs for open source deployment well understood by successful practitioners?
  • Are higher education specific open source products more responsive to the needs of the industry than comparable commercial products?  Why or why not?  How are the products perceived by end users?
  • Has open source served as a platform for innovation in higher education?  How and by whom?
  • What are the best practices in developing an institutional strategy for open source?
  • Is there an industry roadmap for higher education open source?
  • Where do institutions go to get guidance on open source issues?
